Body-building Tip #45 – These thoughts are designed to help members of the body at Grace to encourage one another’s faith. Eph 4:1,2 “I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility…”

For you to ponder: Paul urges us, not based on being physically restrained in prison but being a willing captive for the Lord, to live our lives in a direction that clearly shows that Christ is our Lord. One of four characteristics of such a life listed in this passage is humility. Christ was an example of humility in both service and suffering. Though God in the flesh, He humbled Himself in serving the weak, lowly, undeserving and ungrateful. He gave His very life for you and me though we are so unworthy of His love.

Tip: God likely wants you to encourage the faith of someone who is really struggling. Maybe the person is not highly regarded by others and seems undeserving. Or maybe your efforts will be met with ingratitude or rejection. In Philippians, Paul’s exhortation is “…in humility count others more significant than yourselves.” Just as Christ, our great Example, ministers to you and to me, so we should seek to minister to others regardless of their problems or attitudes.

Challenge: Scripture speaks of the “humble mind.” The ministry of encouragement cannot be successful if we are more concerned about ourselves than about others. Under the Spirit’s direction, humility starts in the mind as we focus on living a life that reveals the humility of our Savior and Friend.
